Especially, from our homebred, dark fawn intermediate male, Waratah Flats Earl Grey, who took out the major prize of Supreme Champion Huacaya.

Alpaca Expo 2008 - Christchurch

I think everybody who attended this years Expo really enjoyed the experience and congratulations to all those ribbon winners. The compertition is certainly getting tough, so if you got a ribbon (any colour), then "well done" - you deserve it.

The Waratah Flats show team did well in the show ring this year and all but two of our 10 entries came home with ribbons. We were delighted with WF Jacana taking out Champion Veteran Female, adding to the Champion Senior Female she took out at the 2004 Expo (these are the only times she has ever been shown - so well done Jacana). We were also delighted with two of our stud males taking out Reserve Championships, with WF Achilles taking Reserve Champion Senior Male and WF Marco Polo taking out Reserve Champion Veteran Male.

The main highlights were:

  • Waratah Flats Champagne - 2nd in class

Malvern A&P Show March 2008 - Inaugural Coloured Alpaca Show - Sheffield

This was the first all colour show (no whites) in NZ and was greeted with much excitement from the breeders of coloured alpaca throughout the Canterbury area. It was a great day out and the competition was steady, with some big class numbers. It was wonderful to see such good numbers of the browns and blacks, while some of the fawn classes were very large.

The Waratah Flats show team had a great day, particularly with our fawns and we were very proud to come home with the Supreme Champion Haucaya, taken out by WF Obsession. She is a very special alpaca in other ways, being the daughter of our female twin Skylark born in Feb 2005.

WF Obsession

  • 1st Junior Fawn Female
  • Champion Fawn
  • Supreme Champion

WF Achilles

  • 1st Senior Fawn Male
  • Reserve Champion Fawn

WF Adventure

  • 2nd Junior Brown Male
  • Reserve Champion Brown

National Alpaca Expo November 2007 - Hamilton

As I was the fleece judge for the Expo we only had a small team entered in the show ring, but we were never the less very happy with our results. Competition was very keen indeed, with lots of big classes and a host of high quality alpaca on display. In the junior classes, WF Obsession got a 3rd in the junior fawn female class, out of seventeen I think. While it was WF Lightning that this time took out the Intermediate White Male class. Our only broad ribbon this year came from the Get of Dam class, with WF Lightning and WF Storm Cloud wining the day for their mother WF Jacana.

Manawatu Show November 2007

This was our first time at the Manawatu Show, which this year was held in the new A&P building near Fielding. As it was only a week before the Expo, there was a record turn out, with over 200 alpaca on display. We had a good show, with most of our team winning ribbons and it was especially pleasing for some of the juniors, who did really well in some very strong classes.

Highlights for Waratah Flats had to be the placement of WF Lightning and WF Storm Cloud first and second in the intermediate white male class. With WF Storm Cloud going on to win Champion Intermediate Haucaya.

Ellesmere A & P Show - Oct 2007

Highlights have to be the first (WF Avalanche) and second (WF Lightning) places in a strong class of intermediate white males, with both males going on to win Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons.

We were also delighted with many of our juniors, with WF Adventure taking first in a strong class of brown males, while WF Spellbound winning her white and light fawn class and the Reserve Champion Junior Female.

Plus, we also managed to take out first (WF Avalanche and WF Lightning) and second (WF Achilles and WF Trojan Gold) in the Sire Progeny class, reflecting the high quality of their respective sires Jolimont Attitude and Kaihere Peruvian Ven Chura. While WF Achilles and WF Trojan Gold were first in the Get of Dam class, on behalf of their mother Waratah Flats Juanita.

Ashburton A & P Show - Nov 2006

Our recently acquired young fawn male, Homestead Gold Star won first in his intermediate class, ahead of several other good quality fawns, in what was a strong class. The judge commented on his fleece density and soft handle.

National Alpaca Expo - Nov 2006

We were really delighted when Waratah Flats Rosewood gained the Reserve Champion Adult Female at this year's National Show. This was a great achievement for a brown alpaca, up against some classy whites, and reflects her true qualities as a top line coloured female.

In the fleece section, Waratah Flats Achilles, won first place with his Junior (2005) fleece, in the mid to dark fawn class. The judge, Cameron Holt was impressed by the fineness and uniformity of his fleece.

 --

Ellesmere A&P Show - Oct 2006

Our young intermediate fawn male, Waratah Flats Achilles, once again took out first place in his class. And with his full brother, Waratah Flats Trojan Gold, they came very close to also taking out the top awards in the "sires progeny" and the "get of dam" classes. Each time they came a close second to a white pair of huacaya.
